Dunno what it's like for a Mexican citizen, but I know getting mine as a U.S. citizen so I could go to Japan (a trip that wound up being canceled) was no picnic...

About the passport, the words of Frank Herbert in Dune Messiah are appropriate:

The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree...[A]ny use of power over another the ultimate assumption remains: "I feed on your energy."

Or from Heretics of Dune:

Bureaucracy destroys initiative. There is little that bureaucrats hate more than innovation, especially innovation that produces better results than the old routines. Improvements always make those at the top of the heap look inept. Who enjoys appearing inept?

I remember these quotes every time I have had to go to the Town Hall, or be at the RMV/DMV.

Imagine each time you have to pass the border you can get one of 2 possible outcomes.

a)Friendly American officer that will just ask you the address of where you are staying and the reason you are going into the USA. Usually ends up with "I am heading to XYZ hotel for week and half because I am going to San Diego Comic Convention" "here you go pay 6 dollars for your permit. Enjoy your stay in the US." In other words peachy.

b)Hell on earth. the officer thinks you are going to mind control americans to let you conquer the USA with your super ultra magical mexican powers!. so they stuck you for 3 hours in a small room asking you questions and papers that you would never dream to bring to pass the border "huh? my college degree? I am just going to a comic convention...."

so for mexicans its a coin toss when going to the USA for vacation

Yay! We're such good neighbors...

:P

We really need to improve how we handle that big border that also belongs to Mexico, not just us Norte Americanos...

Well, the only real issues I had to deal with when I got mine was the amount of people there both times, and the subsequent waiting in line. Other than that it went pretty smoothly.

Ms. Campos,

California is a big place, and I hope that you will have fun at the 'Comic Con.' I also hope that you don't get stuck in ridiculous lines like I did last time I went to the RMV/DMV. I think that Dante Alighieri's inferno laked true torture, he should have had an RMV/DMV in Hell. Now that's sadistic torture!

On the eighth of last month you put out a request for an artist to help you out with a project. I hope it is not too bold of me to ask but: did you find the help that you wanted; and what do you need help with?

Gotta get this Genesis lyric out of my system. No insult intended.

Now don't tell nobody
What I wanna do
If they find out
You know they'll never let me through
And It's No Fun
Being an Illegal Alien

Oooh!! now I have a good reason to go to the comicon... :D hehe

Really though, it's a very good thing you're starting early. get all the paperwork out of the way first so there's no trouble later. Also, you should try booking a hotel about now too, that comicon is a madhouse, and it fills up the hotels for miles...

heh exactly it's really crazy all the people that show up at the comicon. I hope you've got your costumes ready too, you'll see every which type you could figure. I'm glad you've got your hotel already, though good luck w/ your visas. hopefully it'll all go well and easy. It's not like you're a terrorist or anything.

There should be a weight limit and gender limitations on Princess Leia costumes. Or at the very least make them wax.

Can't say that I have ever been fortunate enough to attend a comic-con with cos-play; but people post lots of cos-play on Deviant Art, and most of the results are either horrifying or laughable ridiculous. Some are very good and quite enjoyable, but those are few are far between.

A thirty year old dressing up as Inuyasha or Harry Potter once or twice a year has nothing on this:
